Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the character in five short stories by Putu Wijaya using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic approach. The type of research used is descriptive qualitative. The data sources in this study are five short stories by Putu Wijaya and the data obtained in this study are in the form of quotations in the form of words, phrases, clauses, sentences and expressions that refer to the character traits contained in five short stories by Putu Wijaya. The data collection method used in this research is reading and writing technique. The data analysis method used in this research is content analysis method.

The results of the study found three personality structures, namely id, ego, and superego. With the dominance of ego, Putu Wijaya's short stories often display the rational and realistic character of the protagonist. In-depth analysis shows that this Ego dominance reflects how Putu Wijaya portrays his characters as individuals who are able to navigate life's challenges with a logical and pragmatic approach. The protagonists in the short stories are often presented as figures who face internal and external conflicts by trying to find solutions that make sense and are acceptable to all parties
