Abstract

This study explores the effectiveness of Duolingo, a mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) application, in enhancing English proficiency among Red Cross Youth members at MAN 1 Kota Semarang. A total of 30 participants used Duolingo over a 30-day period to supplement their English language learning outside the classroom, focusing on speaking, listening, and overall motivation. The research employed a mixed-method approach, combining daily journals, surveys, and pre-test and post-test evaluations to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. The daily journals tracked students' usage patterns and engagement with the app, while the surveys assessed their motivation to learn English. Pre- and post-test assessments were conducted to measure improvements in English skills.

The results revealed a significant improvement in students' motivation and language skills. A total of 85% of students reported that Duolingo made learning more enjoyable, and their speaking and listening abilities improved due to the app’s interactive features and instant feedback. Statistical analyses, including paired sample t-tests and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, confirmed significant progress in English proficiency, with the post-test results showing a notable increase compared to pre-test scores.

The findings highlight Duolingo’s potential as an effective tool for enhancing language learning, especially in environments with limited resources. By integrating Duolingo into formal education settings, this study demonstrates how mobile-assisted learning can address challenges like low motivation and lack of infrastructure, providing a practical approach to improving English skills. This research contributes to the growing body of work on technology integration in language education.
