The Analysis of Lexical Cohesion in EFL Students` Expository Writing

Lexical cohesion is needed in writing exposition text. Lexical cohesion consists of two parts, namely reiteration and collocation. This research aims to find out the types of lexical cohesion and the contribution of lexical cohesion in students' exposition writing. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The result of this research is the main lexical coherence, collocation, and repetition (which includes antonymy, repetition, synonymy, meronymy, and hyponymy) reaching 95 occurrences. The most common type of repetition is repetition (85 occurrences), followed by collocation (10 occurrences) as the most common type of lexical cohesion. The following is a detailed explanation of each lexical cohesiveness. By utilizing lexical cohesion, it can strengthen the reader's understanding of the core of the argument and ensure that the reader stays connected to the key information. Lexical cohesion helps keep the narrative clear and structured, so that readers can easily follow and understand the context and issues discussed.
